Dr Ann Fitzgerald
Dr Ann Fitzgerald is a counselling psychologist with almost 20 years NHS and private practice experience working in a diverse range of mental health outpatient settings. She works with older adolescents 16+ years, young and older adults, couples and families taking a holistic approach to understand the psychological factors that contribute to human distress. This includes all mental health disorders with the most common being anxiety and depression. However, you may not have received a formal diagnosis, and this is often the best time to seek psychological therapy to prevent a problem escalating. Ann is particularly interested in working with identity, relationship, emotional and behavioural instabilities and problems.
|
Ann has trained in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), person-centred, mentalization based treatment (MBT) and psychodynamic approaches all of which emphasise the importance of building a robust and meaningful psychotherapeutic relationship and working alliance. Importantly much research suggests that the therapeutic relationship is the instrument of change in therapy, providing the relational foundation necessary for reparation and to develop the coping strategies, skills and techniques to support a sustainable recovery.
More recently Ann is working towards a dual qualification as a Sports and Exercise Psychologist and is currently in the process of undertaking stage II BPS training. Specific sports related issues she works with include motivation, focus and concentration, managing stress and competitive anxiety, the athlete-coach relationship, self-esteem, dealing with injury, adjustment and working with different stages of the athlete’s career development and transitions.
